Troubles With Using ChatGPT For Email Marketing? Try This Guide

Growing your email list is a thing of beauty, isn’t it?

Yet, the larger it becomes, the harder it is to regularly supply your email subscribers with personalized and engaging emails.

Automation services like Snov.io can help you strategize your email marketing campaigns, but today, I’m here to tell you about the absolute know-how not all businesses are still using to its full potential – ChatGPT.

In this post, we’ll explore how you can use ChatGPT to supercharge your personalized email marketing, improve engagement rates, save time, skyrocket conversions, and stay ahead of the competition.

What is ChatGPT for marketing?

ChatGPT is a language model that uses deep learning to generate human-like responses to text inputs.

When in business circles you hear about ChatGPT, marketing specialists will hurry up to share their stories, where they’ll tell you how to use ChatGPT for marketing successfully.

In our recent post, I’ve provided expert-approved tips for leveraging ChatGPT in sales. In this article, I’m focusing on AI-powered email marketing, as 64% of businesses use email outreach for communication with their customers, partners, and influencers.

Meanwhile, 38% of marketers use AI to craft emails. If you’re not yet among them, let’s solve this slight misunderstanding, shall we?

Benefits of ChatGPT for email marketing

ChatGPT can facilitate your email marketing by offering assistance with the following aspects:

  • Automation. ChatGPT can take over repetitive email marketing tasks such as answering customer queries, sending follow-up emails, and segmenting email lists. What is more, it can whip up full emails, email snippets, or templates in less than a minute, freeing up time you can spend on more strategic tasks.
  • Personalization. ChatGPT can analyze information about your target audience and create emails that resonate with your prospects and customers.
  • Customer engagement. Using ChatGPT, you can generate emails with engaging content like quizzes, surveys, or feedback requests, creating interactive experiences that cement your relationship with prospects and customers.
  • Email copywriting. ChatGPT can help you write an engaging and error-free email copy and structure the content of your emails to hook your readers and prompt them to act.
  • Email proofreading. ChatGPT can act like a proofreading tool, checking your emails for grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors. Your emails will always sound professional and present your company in the best light.
  • Translation. Is your customer base multilingual? Leveraging the concept of machine translation, ChatGPT can translate your emails into other languages, opening up your campaigns to international markets.
  • A/B testing. ChatGPT can do a split test for your emails by generating multiple variations of email content (e.g., subject lines, email layouts, CTAs) to identify the top performers, letting you optimize your campaigns for maximum impact.
  • Email deliverability and open rate increase. Thanks to email copy and subject line optimization, ChatGPT facilitates inbox email placement and increases the chances of your emails being opened and read by recipients.
  • Customer satisfaction. With ChatGPT, you can offer 24/7 support to your customers via email. It handles inquiries, provides instant responses, and forwards complex issues to your team. This round-the-clock service enhances customer experience with your brand, helping build trust and loyalty.

How to use ChatGPT for email marketing: best ideas and prompts to steal today

In this chapter, we’ll discuss how you can use ChatGPT to boost your email marketing results. Get ready to steal some of the best tips and examples of prompts to help you automate and personalize your email campaigns through AI.

1. Use ChatGPT to generate newsletter topics

If you’re an email marketing veteran, you know how challenging it is to prepare and send regular newsletter content that would be super relevant and engaging to your email readers.

With ChatGPT, this is no longer a problem! You can harness this tool to generate newsletter topics based on your target audience’s interests:

Or you can ask ChatGPT to generate the content for your newsletter based on a particular topic:

We leverage the power of ChatGPT in email marketing to effectively communicate with our audience. By using it, we can craft compelling email contents about our new blog posts, deliver newsletters packed with valuable financial advice and the latest news, and foster a strong and engaged community of readers.

2. Use ChatGPT to create email automation workflows

Let’s face it: one of the most difficult aspects of email marketing is to craft a coherent email sequence where each message logically follows the previous one based on your subscribers’ reactions.

Thankfully, ChatGPT ChatGPT is here to take that stress away. Simply share the goal of your campaign, target recipients, and possible triggers (like your email recipients’ behavior), and ChatGPT will help outline your email marketing campaign:

Once you’ve got the email workflow mapped out, Snov.io cold email can take over, automating the entire sequence, scheduling follow-ups, and setting the optimal email sending time and frequency. Talk about a dynamic duo!

Let’s take a look at how you can leverage ChatGPT to draft individual emails within your campaign.

By leveraging ChatGPT’s automated email marketing/email outreach solutions, we have seen a significant increase in our customer engagement metrics. We are able to reach more customers with the right message at the right time, resulting in higher customer engagement and improved marketing performance.

3. Use ChatGPT to create catchy subject lines

Nothing can increase your email open rate better than an engaging subject line. ChatGPT can help you automatically generate subject lines that are so eye-catching and intriguing that your recipients’ curiosity won’t stand a chance.

It’s flexible, too – you can modify your queries and ask AI to play with different styles, subject line lengths, and personalization.

And if you’ve already got a couple of subject lines that haven’t brought you a desired open rate, you can ask ChatGPT to revamp them.

Want to sprinkle in some emojis? No problem:

ChatGPT doesn’t just help us pen engaging content, it’s GREAT at creating catchy subject lines, too (and gives you options as well), boosting our email deliverability by 15%. We do have an email marketer and a copywriter working for us, but ChatGPT makes great, fresh suggestions that they adapt and polish.

4. Use ChatGPT to write an email body

With ChatGPT, you can generate content for every email type in your email marketing strategy. All it needs is a brief with information about the goal of your campaign and your target audience to craft targeted newsletter text.

You might want to specify:

  • The type of the email (welcome email, onboarding email, event invitation, product launch, and so on)
  • Your company
  • Target audience (or specific segments)
  • The goal of your email campaign
  • The tone of the email (formal or informal, perhaps?)

And if you need a full email, not just an email body, add specific requirements for other elements (subject line, email closing, call to action, and the like.)

For example, here’s a simple query for a welcome email with a ChatGPT response:

And what about the most common type of marketing email – the promotional newsletter? Think ChatGPT won’t cope with it? It actually will! 🙂

By the way, that Snov.io educational course we mentioned is real and has already helped hundreds of users enrich their sales knowledge!

Do you need a re-engagement email campaign for inactive subscribers? ChatGPT will solve the problem for you as well:

And if ChatGPT’s first attempt doesn’t quite match your query, don’t get upset. You can always give it additional instructions, so it’ll keep regenerating the response until you’re absolutely satisfied with the result.

ChatGPT’s ability to generate personalized email content based on customer data and historical interactions has had a remarkable impact on our campaigns. We witnessed higher click-through rates as a result, with our rate increasing from 2% to 5%.

5. Use ChatGPT to create persuasive calls to action

Okay, let’s assume the most challenging part of your emails is coming up with the perfect call to action  – one that’s as irresistible as the smell of your morning coffee. Luckily, ChatGPT can help brew up those enticing CTAs too! To get the best results, it’s a good idea to provide the email body text, of course.

6. Use ChatGPT for email A/B testing

You can’t do email marketing like a pro without a solid habit of A/B testing your email campaigns. A/B testing, or split testing, involves comparing two versions of an email to see which one resonates better with your audience.

While ChatGPT can’t perform the actual A/B testing (it’s an AI tool, not an email marketing software), it can be your idea generator for tests.

Above, we’ve already talked about generating subject lines you can further test. But you can also test different email formats, CTAs, and personalization approaches.

The key is to create a well-crafted prompt, giving ChatGPT the context of the email. This should include a brief description of your target audience, the purpose of the email, and the desired outcome. Be clear and concise.

For instance, here’s a prompt I gave ChatGPT:

And here’s the result it generated:

With these two alternatives in hand, you can turn to Snov.io cold email software for your A/B testing needs.

ChatGPT helped us run effective A/B tests for various email variations. We were able to compare and refine our campaigns based on performance by creating alternative versions of email content and subject lines. Conversion rates have increased by 10% as a result of this iterative approach.

7. Use ChatGPT add-ons and plugins for email automation

Did you know that you can turbocharge your AI-driven email marketing with special add-ons and plugins?

For example, with GPT for Work, you can generate personalized emails directly in your spreadsheet, one email per recipient, all customized and following the instructions in your prompt.

To get started, just install and launch the add-on using your OpenAI API key, get the hang of the spreadsheet functions, and create an email for one of your recipients. After that, simply drag the formula to other cells and get bulk personalized emails for your contacts.

Another solution is to sync ChatGPT right with your Gmail account using the Zapier plugin (I’ve found this tip on the All About AI YouTube channel).*

*The expert used the ChatGPT-4 Plus version.

First, you need to connect Zapier with both ChatGPT and Gmail:

Next, head to OpenAI Zapier Action and set up a new Action (e.g., create a draft). Fill in your Gmail account details, the email subject and body, as well as the recipient:

In ChatGPT, make sure the Zapier plugin is selected and write a prompt for AI to generate an email draft.

By following these steps, you can automatically get ChatGPT’s email draft directly in your Gmail!

ChatGPT prompt templates for email marketing

The secret to making the most out of ChatGPT lies in the precision of your prompts. The more specific you are about your product, target audience, and other crucial details, the more tailored and useful the AI’s suggestions will be.

To ease your busy life a bit, I’ve prepared templates for the ChatGPT prompts mentioned above. You can simply copy and paste these to test out how the AI assistant can bolster your email marketing efforts.

But first, don’t forget to sign up for Snov.io! It helps us understand our readers better:)

Feel free to use these ready-made ChatGPT prompt templates in this spreadsheet.

ChatGPT limitations for email marketing

‘Can ChatGPT replace a real email marketer?’ is a question I often come across. My answer today is ‘No.’ Despite being an effective email marketing assistant, ChatGPT still has certain limitations you need to take into account.

Here’s a rundown of a few of them:

ChatGPT can’t ace complex personalization

Unless you use special add-ons or plugins I mentioned earlier, you’ll find it tricky to make ChatGPT personalize each email to cater to your subscribers’ unique needs. The AI needs real-time knowledge of their interests and purchase history, which is hard to imagine if you are planning to automate bulk email campaigns.

Meanwhile, if you limit your personalization efforts to addressing recipients by name, you’ll still be sending them the same email content, which, in fact, may cost you sender reputation and lead to email deliverability challenges down the line.

You have limited control over the process

If you rely solely on ChatGPT algorithms, you won’t be able to pursue long-term email marketing goals. Say, ChatGPT can help you optimize metrics such as open rates, click-through rates, and conversion rates. Here and now. But what if the goal of your campaign is to build brand awareness? Unfortunately, the tool isn’t equipped to predict broader business outcomes.

ChatGPT offers limited creativity

Creativity is crucial when it comes to effective email marketing. And in this aspect, ChatGPT can’t quite compete with a human marketer. While it can help speed up the technical process, it lacks the ability to think outside the box to deliver content that will be engaging to your subscribers.

ChatGPT struggles with communication nuances

There are social and cultural subtleties in communication that language models are yet to master…unfortunately. Your marketing emails need to stir emotions, which you can do through humor, memes, or language specific to certain cultural groups – an area where ChatGPT currently struggles.

So, what’s the solution?

Find a balance between automation and human input in your email marketing. This ensures your campaigns are targeted, effective, and aligned with your company’s mission. ChatGPT is, without a doubt, an innovation destined to ease the human effort. But only if you use it cleverly.

Let AI generate templates for you, help with email structure, and provide ideas. But consider how your marketing team themselves can contribute to personalizing bulk email marketing campaigns and adapt ChatGPT responses to the needs of your target audience.

And if you need an all-in-one solution for your marketing outreach, look no further than Snov.io – the tool that will automate your marketing efforts from lead generation to AI-driven follow-up emails for your subscribers.
