Hyundai looks to be moving toward extended-range electric vehicles as a practical answer to China’s policy-driven EREV market, which has become a core vehicle category there in recent years. The wider competitive picture shows global automakers working more closely with Chinese technology providers to build up advanced vehicle capabilities. Mercedes-Benz’s latest GLE SUV launched with an assisted-driving system developed together with Momenta, and the vehicle is also expected to later adopt Momenta’s R7 World Model. That shows how software and autonomous-driving features are becoming important differentiators across markets.

The signals for investors and consumers are indirect, but they are clear. Hyundai’s EREV push points to active product and platform repositioning rather than a static EV strategy, while Chinese autonomous-driving firms are also expanding internationally, including Pony.ai’s planned robotaxi rollout in Korea by 2028. Taken together, these developments point to rising competitive pressure and to a market that rewards localized partnerships, new powertrain choices, and advanced driver-assistance technology.
